What is mechanically polished concrete?

Mechanically polished concrete is a finishing process that grinds and polishes the concrete surface with diamond abrasives. It starts with a coarse diamond abrasive, then moves through progressively finer grits until the desired smoothness and level of sheen is reached — from matte through to high gloss. Densifiers and protective treatments are applied along the way to harden the surface, improve durability and enhance the final appearance.

The result is a hard-wearing, aesthetically striking floor that forms part of the slab itself rather than a coating sitting on top of it.

Stone exposure options

The look of a polished floor is largely set by how much stone is exposed during grinding. We work with you to choose the exposure that suits your space:

What are the downsides of polished concrete?

It is the slab, so you get the slab: cracks show, old adhesive can ghost through, and no two floors are the same. It is hard underfoot, cold without a heat source, and not maintenance-free. Polished concrete or tiles?

On a sound slab in an open-plan space, polished concrete is usually the better choice — one seamless surface with no grout. Tiles win where there is no slab, where a certified wet-area system is needed, in small rooms, or where a uniform colour matters.
