Polished concrete maintenance: keeping your floors looking new

Polished concrete is a low-maintenance floor, not a no-maintenance one. A few simple habits will keep the finish looking the way it did on day one, and will delay the point at which professional attention is needed.

Daily care

Daily sweeping or dust mopping is the most valuable thing you can do. Dust and grit are abrasive underfoot, and removing them prevents the fine scratching that dulls a floor over time. A microfibre mop lifts debris without damaging the surface.

For a deeper clean, wet mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. Harsh or acidic products break down the finish.

Spills and stains

Polished concrete resists staining well, but it is not impervious. Wipe up spills promptly so nothing has time to work into the surface. For stubborn marks, a mild detergent and water is usually enough — avoid abrasive or acidic cleaners.

Longer-term maintenance

Depending on traffic, floors benefit from periodic re-sealing to maintain the finish and protect the surface. Where a floor has lost its sheen in the traffic paths, professional polishing can restore it — this is usually a straightforward job.

Preventative measures

  • Mats at entryways catch grit and moisture before they reach the floor
  • Felt pads under furniture legs prevent scratching when things are moved
  • Deal with damage early — small chips are cheaper to address than large ones
